Sherry Karver pushes the parameters of traditional painting by combining digital imagery with oil paint and written narratives. She begins with a black and white print, building up color with layers of oil glazes to create photo-based oil paintings.
Karver adds text over certain people in a crowd in an attempt to individualize them and communicate their own unique story. These brief biographies are from her imagination, and often reveal intimate and humorous details. Through story telling, Karver invites the viewer to experience the artwork beyond simply looking at a picture from a distance.
“I was born and raised in Chicago and now live in Oakland, California,” says Karver. “My work is influenced by city life and the multitude of issues we encounter living in today’s fast-paced society. It deals with loneliness and alienation, the concept of personal identity, and how we as individuals can stand out from the crowd.”
Bodies in Motion and Thought is Karver’s first solo exhibition at Kim Foster Gallery. Her work has been widely exhibited nationally and is included in over 150 private and corporate collections. She has been featured on the cover of over a dozen books and magazines.
