We are pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition 'Vicissitudes' - new paintings by Louis Renzoni. This is his fifth solo exhibition with the gallery.

Using a palette of dark velvety hues, Renzoni creates a noir atmosphere of women caught in a moment of transition. The paintings convey a specific mood, usually a kind of disturbing quiet. He calls it a flicker between the romantic and the ordinary.

These women are imbued with the glamour of old-fashioned movie heroines. They appear doll-like and slightly sinister with liquid eyes, radiant cheeks and cherry lips. They are intended to provoke viewers into imagining complex plots around them.

Figures illuminate within a surreal pictorial space. Renzoni's preference for oblique lines, and the constant opposition of light and dark, creates the compositional tension that exudes in these paintings. Adding to the anxious atmosphere is Renzoni's technique of painting in layers, sanding down, then repainting, a process that obliterates certain detail but leaves smoky shadows in the background.
